MORRIS MITCHELL
Artist · Educator · Lifelong Seeker
For more than six decades, Morris Mitchell explored ideas, materials and the possibilities of making art—creating a body of work as varied and inquisitive as the artist himself.
A Lifetime of Exploration
Morris Mitchell never confined himself to a single style, medium, or way of working. His work evolved throughout his life—sometimes dramatically—as he continued to experiment, question, and pursue new ideas.
Spanning more than six decades, the collection reveals an artist continually willing to move, change and explore.
Artist • Educator • Mentor
Morris Mitchell spent a lifetime making art, but his legacy extends far beyond the work he left behind.
For more than four decades, he taught and challenged generations of artists at Ringling College of Art and Design. His students knew an artist who encouraged curiosity, intellectual exploration and the willingness to question what they thought they knew.
To his students, colleagues, friends and family, Morris was simply Moe.
His influence can still be found not only in his own work, but in the artists, educators and people whose lives he touched along the way.
A Lifetime of Work, Rediscovered
Following Morris’s passing, his wife, Marty Mitchell, began the considerable process of gathering, documenting and preserving the work of a lifetime.
Today, with the assistance of family, friends, art professionals and historians, hundreds of works are being photographed, cataloged and brought together—some familiar, others being seen again for the first time in decades.
The collection reaches from Morris’s earliest student work through the final years of his life and reflects an extraordinary range of periods, styles, techniques, media and artistic exploration.
As this work is documented, much of the collection is being made available for acquisition—giving former students, friends, collectors, galleries, institutions and those discovering Morris for the first time an opportunity to experience and own an original work.
The Estate Collection
As the Morris Mitchell Estate continues documenting the collection, original works spanning decades of Morris’s career are becoming available for acquisition.
The collection varies considerably in period, medium, scale, and price, creating opportunities for longtime collectors and institutions as well as former students, friends, and those encountering Morris’s work for the first time.
Whether you are looking for a single work that speaks to you, considering multiple pieces for a collection, or exploring work for a gallery, institution, business or public environment, we welcome the conversation.
